Get to know our Oceans Blueprint Team - Part One
The Oceans Blueprint team has been growing over the past few years, and we thought we would share some personal insights into our team. First up, we want to introduce our Principal Research Scientist, Dr. Kerstin Bilgmann, and our Research Scientist & Media Officer, Alexandra D’Cruz. We asked them a few questions to learn more about their interests in marine science and what inspires them.
What inspired you to become a Marine Scientist?
Kerstin:
I remember as a child, I was already really interested in nature and the ocean, and I had an interest in marine science from very early on. I wanted to understand how we as humans impact the world around us.
Alex:
I grew up around the ocean and had a love for the marine world from a very early age. Around high school, I started to learn more about the pressures and impacts that our oceans face, and from then on I was inspired to continue learning, and use that knowledge to protect and conserve our oceans.
What are your main areas of interest?
Kerstin: How wildlife responds to human impacts and what we can do to protect endangered species and wildlife. It was a real ‘ah ha!’ moment, when I realised how incredibly dependent we as humans are on the environment around us, and that there is still so much work to be done to ensure long-term survival of species and protection of ecosystems.
Alex: Understanding how human activities can impact our oceans and particular species. I am also very interested in how science can be communicated to a wide range of audiences across different media platforms.
Can you share one highlight of your career so far?
Kerstin: I remember being down in the hull of a boat at night-time, I fell asleep, and then I was woken up by dolphins whistling as they were riding the bow of the boat. And on another occasion I remember being woken up by a singing humpback whale. I remember looking through the windows and seeing bioluminescence moving in the shapes of dolphins through the water. Nowadays, I’m really excited about new generations and young people finding their passion for science and following their heart.
Alex: A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to work on Dambimangardee Country in the Kimberley region to survey for snubfin dolphins. Working on Country in a remote part of Western Australia alongside the Traditional Owners is definitely a highlight of my career. We had some amazing encounters with large groups of snubfin dolphins which was also great to see!
And what do you do outside of work for fun?
Kerstin: I love being down by the ocean and running around with my two kids on the sand. I love practicing yoga as it gives me clarity of mind and so many health benefits. I do love a cup of coffee, spending time with my husband, my kids, and friends!
Alex: I’ll usually be spending time in nature, whether that’s surfing, running, or hanging out with my beautiful Kelpie. And I love to spend time with my friends and family, especially over a home-cooked meal!
